Westport author scoops $55,000 Ockham New Zealand Book Award
A grateful and understandably emotional Becky Manawatu accepts $55,000 Ockham New Zealand Book Award tonight for her first novel Auē.
Emotions were running high tonight as Westport author Becky Manawatu acknowledged family and supporters after winning the $55,000 Ockham NZ Book Award for fiction.
Manawatu also paid tribute to Jann Medlicott for the generous prize.
"I can't put into words what this will do for my family," she said.
The story of Auē is a novel that is both raw and sublime, a compelling new voice in New Zealand fiction.
"Auē found a home in many of it's readers hearts. I'm grateful for the aroha and the true sense of the word. The aroha the story is read with and given". Manawatu said.
The awards ceremony was streamed live on YouTube and Facebook, after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the awards event.
