TPP student cupcakes brighten Daffodil Day

Bright yellow cupcakes with butterfly icing decorations will be brightening the streets of Greymouth when Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) West Coast Trades Academy cookery students once again raise funds for Daffodil Day.

Following a hugely successful fundraiser last year, where students baked more than 200 cupcakes for the Cancer Society, TPP will once again take to the kitchen ahead of Daffodil Day on Friday 28 August 2020.

Cookery Tutor Evelyne Baumgartner says the students are excited to get involved in the fundraiser. “Last year’s effort was a fantastic experience for our students – for many it was the first time they had been involved in raising funds for charity and they were really buzzing at how well the cupcakes sold on the day.

“This year, our new students wanted to get involved. They have already started making the dainty butterflies out of icing as decorations and we’re getting ready for a big bake on Friday 28 August.”

Just like last year, cupcake pre-sales are now available from the TPP Greymouth campus reception on Tainui Street (cash only). Cupcakes can be picked up on the 28th from the TPP kitchen – the local Cancer Society are providing balloons and decorations so it will be easy to spot. Sales will also be available on Friday 28 August from TPP’s Tutoro Restaurant and hopefully students get a chance to head out to nearby businesses as well.

“We’re hoping for another great round of support from the local community. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who got behind the initiative last year and we’re excited to be doing it again. We’re going to have a big morning of baking and decorating on the 28th of August – if you’re thinking of buying a cupcake, don’t forget about the pre-sale opportunity as it gives us a bit of an idea whether we need to bake 100 or 400!”

The Cancer Society of New Zealand's Daffodil Day symbolises hope for one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. Since 1990, this iconic event has inspired people to come together and support the Cancer Society's work. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand.

The West Coast Trades Academy gives secondary school students the chance to start training for a trade while they are still at school. TPP delivers cookery training at levels 2 and 3 to trades academy students.
