A front preceded by a strong moist northerly flow is forecast to move over the South Island today.

A Heavy Rain Warning is in force for Fiordland, Westland, Buller. A Strong Wind Warning is in force for the Canterbury High Country.

In addition to the Warnings, Watches for northerly gales are in force for Fiordland, parts of Southland and Otago, Marlborough, Wellington, southern Wairarapa, and now including south Taranaki.

Note, on Sunday behind this front, a trough is expected to move onto Fiordland and Westland bringing further rain, and the warnings could be extended.

People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case part of the Watches are upgraded to a warning or further areas are added.
