Police Commissioner Andrew Coster opened a media gathering at 1.45pm this afternoon stating.
"It's with a heavy heart that I confirm one of our colleagues injured in the incident in Massey today has died. This is devastating news and absolutely the worst thing for us to have to deal with. We have lost a colleague and friend in our police whanau. Our thoughts are with the officer's family and loved ones."
This was a routine traffic stop that police undertake on any given day. At 10.30am this morning a car was pulled over and the two attending officers were shot and a member of the public injured.
The second officer and a member of the public are currently in hospital.
The offender fled the scene this morning and still remains at large.
"Our priority is to support our officers and to locate the offender as soon as possible," Coster said.
Police would remain armed in the area.
Further information will be released as it becomes available.
