KiwiRail has started the process of extending the Greymouth platform to accommodate longer trains and to improve access as part of the government’s investment into the Tranz Alpine.
KiwiRail Chief Operating Officer Todd Moyle said the works are expected to take several months to complete.
“The contract for work to extend the platform has been awarded to Brian Perry Civil. Two local Greymouth companies are the major civil subcontractors for this project,” he said.
Grey District Council issued notices to those who rented car park space in Badger Lane behind the current works, that car parks would not be available from 17 July to 31 December. An alternative car park space in Boundary Street or Wilson Lane was offered to those affected.
Labour MP Damien O'Connor said the government puts a lot of money into KiwiRail and understands the importance from an infrastructure, freight and tourism perspective.
"We are committed to supporting the Tranz Alpine," he said.
