The Greymouth memorial baths, located next to Sawyers Creek in Turumaha Street, were opened in 1956 to commemorate people from the area who fought in the Second World War. But in 2009 the pools were closed and replaced by the Greymouth Aquatic Centre in High Street.
Once the new facility opened, then Mayor Tony Kokshoorn had a vision of bringing together a range of sporting groups into one area. The footage below was filmed after the opening on the Aquatic Centre.
The Westland Recreation Centre now has swimming pools, hydroslides, spa, sauna, gym, group fitness classes, sports stadium for multi sporting codes, an activity/meeting room and much more, all designed to meet a range of community sporting, leisure and recreational needs.
It is adjacent to the croquet, tennis and hockey grounds, as well as close to Greymouth High School basketball court.
This makes it the ideal venue for hosting national tournaments of various sporting codes.
