Greymouth Dance Comps off

In their 106th year the Greymouth Competition Society dance competitions have been cancelled.

The committee met last night and in light of the Covid 19 situation made a decision that they could not afford finances required to host this years competition at the Regent Greymouth.

It would have been their 106th festival in 2020. The last interruption to the yearly event had been during a World War.

The meeting went late into the night but ultimately like many shows and sporting events this year, the out come was inevitable.

"It has been so hard to make a call and we just didn't know how this year would go or where things would be with regards to Covid" Secretary Allie Sullivan told McBride Vision.

The committee hope the public and dancing community understand.

"We truly feel sorry, it's a crazy time we are currently in".

They are asking for trophies to be returned and now the focus will move to a bigger and better competition in 2021.

Their dance competitions attract hundreds of people to the region and run over four days injecting huge amounts of money into the local economy.
