GDC officially has NZ's lowest average rates
The Ratepayers’ Report now confirms Grey District Council as charging the lowest average residential rates in the country.
This news is the result of Central Otago District Council publicly conceding it issued incorrect rates data to the authors of the Report - despite a separate pre-publication request by the Taxpayers’ Union for the Council to check its data. Central Otago District Council’s statement can be viewed below, and the rates ranking at www.ratepayersreport.nz has now been updated to reflect that Council’s new information.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Louis Houlbrooke says, “It’s astonishing that despite having explicitly been asked to review data before its publication, Central Otago District Council still got it wrong. That said, we thank them for publicly fronting up to their mistake.”
“We would like to congratulate Grey District Council which now officially has the lowest average residential rates in New Zealand, at $1,739. Ratepayers in Carterton and Auckland who pay twice as much will be looking on in envy.”
Ratepayers report was delayed this year due to COVID-19. The 2021 edition is expected to be published in April next year.
